Gemotions

The attic air was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things. Clara hummed a tuneless melody, carefully stepping around a moth-eaten trunk. Sunlight, slicing through a grimy window, illuminated the swirling particles dancing in the air. She’d always loved this part of the house, the quiet solitude, the weight of history pressing gently around her.

She unearthed a cardboard box marked "Grandma Elsie - Memories." Her fingers, moving almost of their own accord, lifted the lid. Inside, nestled amongst brittle tissue paper, lay a series of photographs.

One, in particular, caught her eye. It showed Elsie, her grandmother, laughing, arm-in-arm with a man who was distinctly *not* her grandfather. The story she'd always been told was one of a swift romance, a whirlwind courtship. This photo… this shattered that narrative. A slow smile spread across her face.
